
The wood feels different up close. Timber beams darkened by age, surfaces worn smooth where generations of hands have passed, and joints fitted so precisely that metal fastenings seem almost unnecessary.
This is one of the defining features of Dong architecture in Guizhou. In villages such as Zhaoxing, multi-storey drum towers rise without nails, their timber frames held together through traditional joinery. Wind-and-rain bridges span streams and rivers nearby, while wooden houses follow the contours of valleys and mountain slopes. These buildings are not simply decorative expressions of ethnic identity. Drum towers remain communal gathering places, and the architecture reflects ways of building adapted to village life, landscape and locally transmitted craftsmanship.

Shi Shanzhang holds a specific title within Dong communities: Zhangmo Shi, the formal name for a master carpenter qualified to design and oversee the construction of a wooden building from first beam to final eave. It is a role earned through decades of apprenticeship, and what makes anyone who holds it capable of raising a multi-storey structure with no nails and no written plan is not a mystery. It is a parallel design system most outsiders never learn exists.
Since there are no formal architectural drawings in Dong construction, masters complete the design process by building small physical models first, working out proportion and structure at miniature scale before a single full-size timber is cut.
Construction management then proceeds through bamboo sticks inscribed with a specialised notation called Mo Shi Wen, the master’s script. These precise marks indicate dimension, angle and sequence for every piece in the building, a system functioning as something between a blueprint and a musical score, legible only to someone trained in reading it.
The frame itself is connected entirely by mortise-and-tenon joinery, without a single nail, yet remains exceptionally strong. The load is distributed across thousands of individual joints rather than concentrated at metal fasteners that would, eventually, corrode, loosen or split the wood around them. A building assembled this way ages by settling more evenly into itself, which is part of why structures built this way regularly outlast those held together by iron.
This architecture makes more sense when seen within the communities that created it. The drum towers, timber houses, bridges, crafts and ceremonies of Guizhou’s Miao and Dong villages are all part of the same living cultural landscape.
Zhaoxing Dong Village, in Liping County, has stood since the Northern Song Dynasty, roughly the 10th to 12th century, and its identity is inseparable from the five drum towers that rise above it, one for each of the village’s clan groups. Locals describe the riverside settlement as a “timber ark”, the five towers marking its prow, sails and stern, as though the entire village were a single vessel built to hold a community rather than carry cargo.
At the village’s stern stands the Xintuan Drum Tower, 24 metres tall and crowned with eleven tiers of upturned eaves. Its surfaces are carved with scenes of farmers tending terraced fields and singers harmonising with mountain echoes. The tower once functioned as an early-warning communication hub, its height engineered to amplify drumbeats across the valley as a signal of danger. Long before either function needed separating, the building served as both social centre and alarm system.
A typical Dong drum tower rises through successive tiers of progressively narrowing eaves. From a distance, the profile reads as pagoda-like, but structurally it is something else entirely: not a stack of separate floors, but a single continuous frame. The eave levels are produced by bracket arms extending outward from a central system of interlocking pillars rather than by independent floor construction.
The central pillar runs the full height of the structure. Secondary pillars surround it, every connection cut to a precision that is typically measured rather than estimated. The joints are fitted by craftsmen working from the proportional system held in their training rather than from any external reference.
The tower’s ground floor remains genuinely communal. Elders gather there to settle village affairs, younger residents rehearse the polyphonic Grand Song tradition recognised by UNESCO in 2009, and travelling guests are formally received under customs specific to whichever clan the tower belongs to. The drum that gave the structure its name was historically kept at the summit and used to call the village to assembly during emergencies. Largely ceremonial now, the tradition of communal gathering it represents has not faded at all.
The Dong’s second major architectural signature solves a more domestic problem than the drum tower, but solves it with the same nail-free system.
A wind-rain bridge is a covered wooden crossing, its roof and walls sheltering travellers from weather while doubling, throughout the day, as an informal gathering space. Built-in benches line the interior walls, and in an active Dong village these benches are rarely empty.
Residents spend entire afternoons there in conversation, the bridge functioning as the village’s casual counterpart to the drum tower’s more formal assembly role. Zhaoxing alone maintains five wind-rain bridges, one historically associated with each of its clan towers, creating a doubled architecture of gathering spaces distributed evenly across the settlement.
The decorative carving under a wind-rain bridge’s eaves, and the painting across its interior ceiling, typically includes dragons, phoenixes and scenes drawn from regional history. It is a visual vocabulary that reflects centuries of cultural exchange between Dong communities and the Han lowlands beyond the mountains, absorbed and reworked into something distinctly Dong rather than simply borrowed.
No Dong drum tower exists as an isolated structure. Each one belongs to a fixed architectural set, repeated village after village across the region with only minor variation: one drum tower, one wind-rain bridge and one opera stage, built together as a single functional unit serving one clan group.
The structural logic of the tower itself carries meaning beyond engineering. A typical Dong drum tower rests on four thick central pillars supporting the full height of the structure, surrounded by twelve auxiliary eave pillars at the perimeter.
The numbers are deliberate: four for the seasons, twelve for the months. The entire frame functions as a wooden calendar disguised as a building, a structure that represents, in the words passed down through the communities that build them, something close to “forever”.
The floor plan beneath those pillars is typically square or hexagonal, and the tiered eaves above shrink layer by layer as they rise, from a single overlapping tier in the smallest towers to as many as seventeen in the largest. Most settle around 20 metres in total height.
Below the tower itself sits an open square, ringed with benches and centred on a fire pit that stays lit through gatherings. This is the genuine social floor of the building, rather than the tower structure above it.
During Spring Festival, the square fills with villagers playing the Lusheng pipes, performing Dong opera built from traditional folk stories and singing Grand Song late into the night. The tower above functions less as a monument and more as a very tall, very permanent stage backdrop for a celebration that has been repeating in roughly this form for centuries.
Zhaoxing’s five drum towers, one for each of the village’s five clans, named Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi and Xin after the five Confucian virtues, each comes with its own matching wind-rain bridge and its own matching opera stage. The full triplet is repeated five times across a single settlement.
Visitors are asked to request permission from local residents before climbing any tower, and a rope tied across the village gate signals an active sacrifice ceremony in progress, a clear instruction to wait rather than enter. These customs are not performative gestures staged for tourism. They are the same protocols the clans themselves observe with each other.
Zhaoxing’s forest coverage runs at roughly 76 percent, the village basin formed where two mountain streams converge into the gentle river that still runs directly through the settlement, the same waterway the wind-rain bridges were built to cross.
Climbing the hillside near Zhaoxing Middle School, just outside the village proper, gives the clearest available panorama of the entire layout at once: five towers, five bridges, five stages, each cluster marking a different clan’s territory, the whole arrangement legible from above in a way it never quite is from inside the village’s narrow stone lanes.
Where the Dong concentrated their architectural ambition into shared civic buildings, the Miao solved an entirely different problem: how to build a private home on a mountainside that offers almost no flat ground.
The Miao stilted house, known as diaojiaolou, is built directly into the slope rather than on a levelled foundation. The front of the house rests on wooden pillars sunk into the hillside, while the rear is suspended level with the upper part of the slope on poles extending from the same frame.
This combination, grounded at the front and hanging at the rear, gives the diaojiaolou its distinctive, slightly precarious-looking silhouette. It appears to lean out over the valley, even though houses built this way have remained stable for generations.
Most diaojiaolou run three storeys. The base, built from bluestone and pebbles where it meets the ground, holds livestock and storage. The second floor is the home itself, with the living room, kitchen, bedrooms and a specific space outside the central room reserved for resting and embroidery. The third floor stores grain.
Because the upper floors sit higher above the slope, they receive considerably more natural light than the ground level. Historically, that made the upper storeys the practical place for close needlework and craft, and today it means many diaojiaolou still do not bother running electrical lighting up there at all.
Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village holds the largest concentration of this architecture anywhere in the world: over 1,400 households, more than five thousand residents and a population that is 99.5 percent Miao.
Its stilted houses descend two adjacent hillsides in tiers dense enough that, due to the terrain’s limitations, the buildings connect almost without gaps, structure touching structure across the entire slope.
The craftsmen who built this density relied on the same triangular and rectangular bracing principles that hold up the Dong’s drum towers, every column and crossbeam locked into a single continuous structural system rather than thousands of independent houses that simply happen to sit near each other.
Standing on Xijiang’s designated viewing platform in the early evening, watching smoke rise from a thousand kitchens simultaneously across two hillsides of brown-timber rooftops, is the single most complete visual argument Guizhou’s minority architecture makes for itself: an entire society’s domestic life, rendered in wood, mortise and tenon, with not one piece of metal holding any of it up.
From these mountain settlements, the wider journey moves towards an entirely different kind of landscape. The river passage through Qutang, Wu and Xiling on the Yangtze Three Gorges reveals how dramatically China’s geography changes beyond Guizhou.
The Zhangmo Shi craft has been formally recognised as national intangible cultural heritage, an acknowledgement that arrived only after decades of quiet, undocumented practice across hundreds of villages.
The recognition matters, but it does not solve the underlying fragility built into a system with no written plans. The entire body of technical knowledge exists only in the people who currently hold it, transmitted through direct apprenticeship, person to person, the way Shi Shanzhang learned it himself.
When a master dies without having fully trained a successor, specific structural configurations, joint techniques and solutions to particular terrain problems can disappear permanently, with no archive anywhere to recover them from.
Shi Shanzhang, at seventy-six, still teaches apprentices and visits schools to demonstrate mortise-and-tenon joinery to children who have grown up around buildings constructed this way without necessarily understanding how.
Footage of him at work, shared online by his son, has made him something of an unlikely celebrity, regularly compared by admirers to Lu Ban, the legendary patron figure of Chinese carpentry. The comparison is not an exaggeration. It is closer to a fair description of what is still happening in villages like Gaobei: a living tradition, held by a small and ageing number of people, doing exactly what it has always done.
Seeing a working drum tower, walking a wind-rain bridge during the hour residents actually use it, and standing inside a diaojiaolou occupied by the same family for generations, all on the same trip, requires a guide who knows which villages still have a Zhangmo Shi in active practice and which have lost theirs.
A drum tower built without nails does not depend on metal fastenings that can corrode, loosen or split the surrounding timber over time. Instead, its strength comes from the way hundreds of precisely cut wooden joints work together as a single structure.
That is the real achievement here, more than any individual tower’s height or any bridge’s span.
Generations of Dong craftsmen developed a way of building substantial communal structures from timber alone, using knowledge transmitted through practice rather than conventional architectural drawings. The result can still be seen throughout Guizhou today, in drum towers rising above village rooftops, covered bridges crossing rivers and wooden houses following the contours of the mountains.
These are not relics separated from everyday life. They remain part of communities where architecture, craftsmanship and tradition continue to exist side by side.
