Founded by American businessman James Sherwood in 1982, the British Pullman is the epitome of style with eleven individually designed Pullman carriages, each with its own unique and fascinating history. The carefully curated décor will take you back to the elegance of the 1920s and everything from the panelling to the upholstery to the light fittings oozes vintage charm. Be sure to dress to impress as the British Pullman operates a smart dress code, meaning no denim, trainers, caps, shorts or collarless t-shirts.
Now owned by Belmond, the British Pullman visits a wide variety of day trip destinations departing from London Victoria throughout the year. In the calendar, you’ll find stately homes, annual events, historic cities and countryside wineries, so there’s sure to be a journey to suit your tastes and interests. For those who don’t want to disembark at all, there are specially designed afternoon tea and lunch trips, where you can simply relax and enjoy the exquisite cuisine served on board. Although mostly pulled by a diesel engine, throughout the year there are special steam pulled journeys, enhancing the feeling of going back in time.
The British Pullman features eleven Pullman carriages, each dating back to the first half of the twentieth century. Carriages boast tasteful furnishings reminiscent of the 1920s, such as Art Deco style lighting and exquisite marquetry. Discover the intriguing history of each carefully restored carriage below, from royal encounters to film set fame. Each carriage also benefits from its own steward to ensure top-notch service throughout your journey. For a more intimate experience, you can opt for one of the private compartments for two at the end of each carriage or an exclusive coupe for up to four in the recently redesigned Cygnus carriage.
Dating back to 1932, this opulent carriage boasts royal connections, having transported the Queen, the Queen Mother and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1953 and the Queen again in 1964. It was damaged during a Second World War air raid, then restored in 1947, rejoining the Brighton Belle. Look out for the Art Deco style strip lights and impressive marquetry panels.
This carriage took on a new look in 2021 when it was redesigned by film maker Wes Anderson. You’ll find plush green upholstery, symmetrical marquetry and swan detailing. As for its history, the carriage was used in the Festival of Britain rake and also made the final journey of the Golden Arrow in 1972. Cygnus became famous on-screen for its appearance in Agatha in 1972.
Originally built in 1932 for the Brighton Belle, this carriage was later used as a restaurant in Essex. It transported the Queen Elizabeth in 1948 and joined the British Pullman in 1999.
One of the British Pullman’s oldest carriages, Ibis dates back to 1925. Having been used in Italy, then as part of the Golden Arrow service as well as in the Cunard boat train service, this well-travelled coach had settled at Birmingham Railway Museum until it was returned to service on the British Pullman.
Another vestige of the 1920s, Ione has had a varied history as part of the Queen of Scots, Ocean Liner, Bournemouth Belle, Golden Arrow, Yorkshire Pullman, South Wales Pullman and high-speed Talisman services before retiring in 1968. Ione joined the British Pullman from the Birmingham Railway Museum in 1981. Look out for the Victorian frieze.
Particularly admired for its Grecian designs on green-dyed holly wood, Lucille was created for the Queen of Scots Pullman and later featured as part of the Bournemouth Belle. It features 24 seats and was preserved at the South Eastern Steam Centre in Ashford before joining the British Pullman.
Once part of the Devon Belle and the Golden Arrow, Minerva has featured on state visits and royal journeys. Before returning to service on the British Pullman in 1981, it featured in the Lytham Creek Railway Museum’s collection. The Edwardian-style marquetry is particularly noteworthy.
Construction of this first-class parlour car was started in 1938 but not completed until 1951 because of the Second World War. Perseus was part of Winston Churchill’s funeral train in 1965 as well as the Golden Arrow’s final journey in 1972. The carriage features charming old prints and ash panels.
Like Perseus and Cygnus, Phoenix was part of the Golden Arrow’s last journey in 1972. It was also the preferred carriage of the Queen Mother and transported numerous heads of state over the years. The name Phoenix came after it was rebuilt in 1952 following fire damage in 1936. Before joining the British Pullman, it was a restaurant in Lyon. Nowadays passengers enjoy the marquetry flowers on American cherrywood.
Audrey’s travel partner, Vera was also damaged during an air raid on London Victoria Station in the Second World War. Following repairs, the carriage retook its place as part of the Brighton Belle. Vera featured on royal trips in 1953 and 1954, later becoming a garden house in Suffolk before joining the British Pullman in 1990. Look out for the exquisite marquetry antelope.
Zena found on-screen fame in the film Agatha in 1976 and also featured in some of the famous services of the twentieth century such as the Queen of Scots Pullman, the Bournemouth Belle and the Golden Arrow. Be sure to admire the Art Deco-style marquetry.
This delightful journey through the beautiful Kentish countryside will fill you with nostalgic glee. Depart from London Victoria Station and enjoy a glamorous onboard welcome with a champagne reception. As you glide through the countryside, admiring the scenic views of the Garden of England, you’ll be served a splendid five-course meal accompanied by carefully selected wines. For even more vintage charm, opt for the Golden Age of Travel by Steam and relax in your stylish surroundings as a steam locomotive leads the way.

Enjoy an 84-mile round trip, passing glistening lochs and towering mountain peaks. Eagle-eyed passengers might notice the resemblance to the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter film series.
