Day 1

Arrive in Lhasa, Hotel Check-In and Time to Acclimatise, 3,700 m

Arrive in Lhasa by flight or train, and on arrival you will be met by your guide for a comfortable transfer to your hotel and a smooth check in. Once you have settled into your room, the remainder of the day is intentionally calm, giving you time to rest and begin acclimatising to the altitude at your own pace. If you feel up to it, you may choose to take a gentle walk nearby or explore a local market independently for a first glimpse of Lhasa’s daily rhythm, before returning to the hotel for a relaxed evening and an early night ahead of the days to come. You will be staying in  Shangri-La Lhasa, a 5-star hotel.

Day 2

Lhasa: Potala Palace and Sera Monastery

After breakfast, meet your guide in the hotel lobby and begin with one of Tibet’s most iconic sights, the Potala Palace, Lhasa’s defining landmark and an extraordinary symbol of Tibetan history and spirituality. As you explore its layered halls, chapels, and stairways, your guide will help bring the stories to life, from its origins to its role in shaping the city you see today.

Later, continue to Sera Monastery, founded in 1419 and long known for its scholarly tradition. Depending on timing, you may witness the monastery’s lively debating scene, a distinctive and memorable part of monastic life. By late afternoon, return to your hotel with time to rest, relax, and ease gently into the pace of Lhasa.

Inside, the atmosphere is deeply moving, with flickering butter lamps, murmured prayers, and pilgrims who have travelled from across the plateau. Just outside, the surrounding lanes and prayer routes offer a vivid sense of the city’s devotion and daily life, and you will have time to absorb the scene without feeling hurried.

In the afternoon, slow the pace at Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama. Its gardens and pavilions create a calmer contrast to the intensity of the morning, and it is an ideal place to end the day on a softer note. Return to your hotel for a restful evening.

Later, continue onwards into the Yarlung Valley, often considered the cradle of Tibetan culture. In the afternoon, visit Yumbulakhang, regarded as the first building in Tibet and traditionally linked to the earliest Tibetan kings. Arrive in Tsedang for hotel check in and a quiet evening to rest. You will have time to pause, take photographs, and simply take in the scale and clarity of the plateau scenery.

Continue along the lakeside route with scenic stops as the road winds through wide valleys and highland landscapes. Later in the day, arrive in Gyantse, and towards evening visit Pelkor Chode Monastery at sunset, when the light softens over the town and the atmosphere feels especially memorable. Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the best time to visit Tibet for the Tibet Heritage Route: Lhasa, Tsedang, Gyantse & Shigatse?

Spring and autumn are usually the best times, with clearer days and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing in Lhasa and the overland drives via high passes. Summer is warmer and busier. Winter is quieter and can be beautiful, but snow and ice can affect high passes and road timings, so a flexible plan is important.

  • Do I need a Tibet Travel Permit for Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse?

Yes, most travellers need a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet and travel beyond Lhasa, and additional permits may be required depending on route details. Revigorate will advise what is needed for your nationality and travel dates and will help coordinate the required paperwork as part of the booking process.

  • Is this itinerary private or will we be joining a group tour?

This is a private itinerary. You will have your own guide for your party and private transport for the overland route, with touring arranged around your pace rather than a group schedule.

  • What is the level of activity and how much walking is involved?

The activity level is moderate. Expect city and monastery walking, some steps, and periods of gentle sightseeing at altitude, plus longer driving days between towns. The pace can be adjusted with extra rest time, fewer stairs where possible, and slower starts to support acclimatisation.

  • How does acclimatisation work in Lhasa and will we be at high altitude?

Yes, this itinerary travels at high altitude, with Lhasa at around 3,700 m and higher elevations on passes en route to Gyantse. The first day is kept calm to support acclimatisation, and your guide can adapt the pace. We recommend keeping hydrated, taking it slowly, and discussing altitude medication with your doctor if you have concerns.

  • How do we travel on the Tibet Heritage Route?

You arrive into Lhasa by flight or train. The route between Lhasa, Tsedang, Gyantse and Shigatse is travelled by private vehicle with your guide and driver, including scenic drives via the Yarlung Valley and Yamdrok Lake. Departure from Lhasa is by flight or train.

  • Will I have internet access in Tibet and do I need a VPN?

Hotels typically offer Wi-Fi, and a local SIM or eSIM can help with data coverage, though speeds can vary outside cities. Some international websites and apps may be restricted, so many travellers set up a VPN before arrival if they need consistent access to specific services.

  • How does Revigorate work and can you tailor this itinerary to our budget?

Revigorate designs tailor-made private journeys. We start with your dates, priorities and budget range, then propose the best-fit version by adjusting hotel categories, room types, guide arrangements, pacing and optional experiences. You will receive clear options and a refined itinerary before anything is confirmed.
