GoldenPass Express: Switzerland’s Top Scenic Train

Who says the journey can’t be the main event? On the GoldenPass Express, getting from point A to point B is less about speed and more about soaking in every glorious frame of Switzerland’s greatest hits.

Running from Montreux to Interlaken via Zweisimmen, the GoldenPass Express isn’t in a rush to get anywhere fast. And that’s exactly the point. This is travel at its most poetic. You’ll glide through lakefront vineyards, pine-covered valleys, and alpine pastures so green you’ll swear someone cranked up the saturation on your window.

The train itself is a bit of a celebrity, especially the Panoramic and Belle Époque carriages. The Panoramic coaches offer floor-to-ceiling windows so immersive that you'll forget to blink. Meanwhile, the Belle Époque cars take you back to the golden age of travel that will make you feel like you were born in the wrong century.

Some people drive. Some people fly. But if you want to feel Switzerland—to taste the cheese in Château-d’Oex, to wander through the market squares of Interlaken, or to toast the sunset over Lake Geneva from Montreux—you take the train. And not just any train. You take the GoldenPass Express.

GoldenPass Express Stops

Interlaken

Step onto the GoldenPass Express at Interlaken Ost. This is where the mountains flex and the lakes glisten like a luxury watch ad. Nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is where nature got carried away.

Before you board the GoldenPass Express, consider slowing down. You’re in a place where skydivers float down like confetti and paragliders land right next to park benches. Want to ease into the adrenaline? You can start with a ride up to Harder Kulm. At the top: a glass-floored viewing platform, a castle-like panorama restaurant, and views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau trio.

Want a gentler pace? You can catch a steamboat ride across Lake Brienz and hop off at Giessbach Falls. This is where a century-old funicular brings you up to the historic Grandhotel Giessbach.

And speaking of indulgence, Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is your sanctuary. This 5-star palace has been hosting the glamorous and the adventurous since the 19th century.

Gstaad

From Interlaken, the GoldenPass Express glides westward, trading turquoise waters for alpine glam. As the train twists through the lush Simmental Valley, you’ll notice something peculiar: the cows seem better groomed and the chalets look like they’ve had a stylist.

Welcome to Gstaad, darling. Known for its subtle, understated luxury, Gstaad is where billionaires go to not be seen (but still kind of be seen). Once you step off the train, you’ll spot boutiques hiding Cartier beneath carved eaves.

Your first stop? The legendary Gstaad Promenade, where Prada and Hermès rub elbows with fondue shops and art galleries. This isn’t your average “shopping street.” It’s where the elite go to après-ski in cashmere.

For lunch, saunter into The Alpina Gstaad, a five-star sanctuary carved into the hillside. Go and grab a seat at Sommet by Martin Gosche, a Michelin-starred restaurant. If truffle-laced anything is your vibe, this is your culinary temple.

Afterward, head to the Six Senses Spa for a Himalayan salt scrub or a sauna session that looks like it was designed by a minimalist Bond villain.

And when you’ve finally tired yourself out from being effortlessly fabulous, check in at Ultima Gstaad. Think: private chalet suites, marble bathtubs, butler service and in-room spas. It’s like James Bond’s Swiss hideaway, but with more velvet and fewer explosions.

Château-d’Oex

From Gstaad, the GoldenPass Express begins its gentle descent into the Pays-d’Enhaut region. This is where the mountains breathe a little wider and the vibe shifts from “Ski, sip, repeat” to “Let’s float away in a balloon and maybe milk a cow after.”

Welcome to Château-d’Oex (pronounced "shah-toh day"), the capital of hot air ballooning in Switzerland. And possibly the only town where your best selfie angle is directly above your head.

If you’re visiting in January, congratulations! You’ve arrived during the International Hot Air Balloon Festival. Want in on the airborne action? You can actually book a hot air balloon ride year-round.

Back on solid ground, spend some time at the Balloon Museum (Espace Ballon), where you’ll learn about the first nonstop around-the-world balloon flight that launched from right here in 1999. Yes, global aviation history was made in this sleepy little village.

Now, for a slice of luxury, check in at Hotel de Ville. This is a charming boutique stay with gourmet dining that makes full use of the region’s farm-to-table bounty.

Then end your day with a walk along the Gorges de l’Hongrin. This is a peaceful riverside trail lined with moss-covered cliffs and secret waterfalls. You’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a fantasy novel here.

Montbovon

Leaving the cheese-scented skies of Château-d’Oex, the GoldenPass Express makes a dip into the pastoral wonderland of Montbovon.

You probably haven’t heard of it. That’s the point. Tiny, unbothered and blissfully under-hyped, Montbovon is where Switzerland’s quieter soul comes into full view. Blink, and you might miss the station. But why would you?

Now, you’re not here for shopping (there’s no Prada in Montbovon, unless you count a cow named Prada). You’re here for authenticity. This is fondue-in-a-farmhouse territory.

Start your visit with a gentle stroll along the Intyamon Valley. You’ll pass old wooden bridges, sleepy goats and churches that chime in perfect harmony with the wind. And if you are looking for more adventure, you can follow the trail toward Gruyères. Yes, that Gruyères. Go and bask in the knowledge that your hike is literally fueled by cheese and views.

Feeling fancy in the countryside? Stay at Chalet Esprit. This is a high-end mountain lodge just outside the village with panoramic balconies, sheepskin throws and zero noise pollution unless you count the breeze.

And before you hop back on the train, make a detour to the Lac de Lessoc. This reservoir is framed by forested cliffs and the occasional foggy morning mist. It’s so still, you’ll hear your own thoughts.

Montreux

The train makes one final descent. You peer out the window and suddenly, Lake Geneva explodes into view.

Montreux isn’t subtle. It’s fabulous. It's the kind of place where swans outnumber taxis, jazz pours from balconies and the flowerbeds along the lakeside promenade are more color-coordinated than most fashion week outfits.

Start with a leisurely walk along the iconic Montreux Lakeside Promenade. This is where sculptures peek out from the gardens (yes, that’s the Freddie Mercury statue, standing tall in his white tank top glory) and the breeze carries the scent of roses, espresso and possibly fame.

Go and drop by the Montreux Jazz Café (inside the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace) for a cocktail and vinyl listening session or wander into a lakeside bar where live music is basically mandatory.

Hungry? You’ve got two options: dine casually on truffle pasta at a wine bistro or go full-luxury with dinner at La Table du Lausanne Palace. This is where the foie gras comes plated like modern art and the wine list requires its own zip code.

Now, for a luxury experience that feels like stepping into a dream: book a private boat cruise across Lake Geneva at sunset. Imagine yourself with a glass of wine in hand while floating past French vineyards and lakeside castles like you're in an old European film (except you're the main character).

Speaking of castles. Chillon Castle sits just a short walk away. It is perched dramatically over the water like it’s auditioning for Game of Thrones. Take a guided tour through medieval halls, dungeons and courtyards.

When it’s finally time to check in, make it count. Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is the obvious choice. This Belle Époque grande dame offers panoramic lake views, a world-class spa and a breakfast spread so extravagant, it might delay your entire itinerary.

Schedules and Tickets

The GoldenPass Express is a traveling theater with panoramic views. This scenic ride operates year-round, offering one direct journey daily in each direction between Interlaken OST and Montreux. That’s right, no need to switch trains or scramble at busy stations. In just 3 hours and 15 minutes, you’ll glide from lakeside serenity to alpine drama.

Now let’s talk tickets. For travelers who like to keep things simple and sociable, 2nd class is priced at CHF 56 one way. It offers economical comfort, access to onboard catering, spacious luggage compartments, and even ski racks. It’s perfect for those heading to or from the slopes.

If you prefer a bit more elbow room (and a lot more quiet), 1st class is available for CHF 96. You’ll get wider seats, generous legroom, and a more tranquil environment. This class also includes all the amenities of 2nd class, just with a smoother, more refined touch.

Trains run daily, with Montreux departures typically in the morning and Interlaken departures in the early afternoon. Exact schedules can vary slightly by season, so it’s always best to check the official GoldenPass website or the SBB app when planning your trip. Tickets and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance online, via the SBB Mobile app or at any major Swiss train station. And pro tip: if you want that golden window seat (especially in summer or during the festive season), book as early as you can.

The Prestige Class

You know that moment on a plane when you walk past the lie-flat seats and think, “Must be nice…”? Well, on the GoldenPass Express, Prestige Class is that moment.

This is more than just an upgrade. Let’s start with the seats. These aren’t just wider, they’re ergonomically designed thrones that rotate to face the panoramic windows, giving you a full-frontal view of snow-capped peaks. And it’s not just about the visuals, the seats are positioned 40 centimeters higher than standard, so you’re quite literally looking down on your old travel standards. Elevation, in every sense of the word.

Booking Prestige Class is simple, but it’s not to be left to chance. Seats are limited and reservations are required. It’s available on select GoldenPass Express departures and while pricing may vary, expect to pay around CHF 40–49 on top of your standard or first-class ticket.

Onboard Catering

Let’s set the record straight: this isn’t your average soggy sandwich-and-juice-box kind of ride. On the GoldenPass Express, even your snack has a Swiss passport. And the best part? It all comes to you. Meals are delivered right to your seat, so you can sip your champagne while gazing out over grazing cows and flower-strewn meadows. Whether you’re in First Class or Prestige, you can expect white-glove-level treatment with a side of local flair.

But let’s talk about the real stars of this culinary show. If you're feeling like a Bond villain (the elegant kind), go for the Caviar Package. This comes with 20 grams of Oona Caviar N°103, perfectly chilled, served with delicate blinis, a dollop of sour cream and a glass of Duval Leroy Brut Champagne.

Not feeling fishy? No problem. The Apero-Plate Package has you covered with a customizable selection of either local delicacies, vegetarian bites or Swiss cheeses, each paired with your drink of choice.

Early riser? The Breakfast Box delivers a warm croissant, jam, butter, fresh orange juice, and a hot drink to your table.

Now, here's the catch: these culinary delights are available only by reservation and only up to one day before your journey. Sure, there’s a small selection of snacks and drinks on board if you missed the memo, but let’s face it, nothing spoils a luxury train ride like menu FOMO. So plan ahead. Your stomach (and your Instagram story) will thank you.
